A truly weird and rare moment from this spring, finding an Eastern Coachwhip (Masticophis flagellum flagellum) and a Northern Scarlet Snake (Cemophora coccinea copei) under the same rock in the Georgia Piedmont. This was weird for a number of reasons, the foremost being that both of these snakes are incredibly difficult to find in habitat in north Georgia. An Eastern Coachwhip snake (Masticophis flagellum flagellum) (non-venomous) emerges from a Gopher Tortoise burrow being monitored at Archbold. After a quick periscope surveying the surrounding Florida scrub, it races away for an evening foray. Then, we see two Eastern Coachwhips mating outside the same burrow. These long but skinny diurnal snakes are extremely localized and often very difficult to detect in the Piedmont region of the state, where the open habitats they require are much less common than in the Coastal Plain. This is easily one of the largest Coachwhips I have ever found and at a new spot and county for me too!"
