In 1987 Conrail was returned to the private sector in what was then the largest initial public offering in U.S. history, raising $1.9 billion. In the spring of 1997, Norfolk Southern Corporation (NS) and CSX Corporation (CSX) agreed to acquire Conrail through a joint stock purchase.
As a terminal and switching service provider for its owners, CSX Transportation and Norfolk Southern, Conrail continues to provide safe and efficient rail service for many local rail freight customers in Detroit, New Jersey and Philadelphia.
The areas we serve are shared assets of CSX and Norfolk Southern. Customers located along Conrail's lines have access to the national rail network through either railway.
