A potential tropical system brought heavy rain to North Carolina and Tropical Depression Gordo could re-intensify into a tropical storm this week.

A severe storm system that's taking aim at the Mid-Atlantic has flooded the Carolinas with "historic" rains, inundating homes, stranding vehicles and prompting water rescues. Stunned island residents and visitors posted videos and photos on social media showing cars, garages, patios and picket fences covered in floodwaters.

The National Hurricane Center issued tropical storm warnings for much of South and North Carolina late Sunday.

The potential cyclone, which could become Tropical Storm Helene, is expected to move from the Atlantic Ocean and make landfall in South Carolina before moving through the Midlands and continuing inland as it heads north, National Weather Service meteorologists said in a Monday morning briefing.
