No. 2 Michigan State's contest with No. 4 Minnesota on Saturday was a different tale compared to the Spartans' 9-3 blowout against the Golden Gophers on Friday.
Freshman Syla Swords scored 23 points, eight in the fourth quarter, and No. 24 Michigan edged No. 23 Minnesota 70-65.
MSU (20-3-3, 11-2-3 B1G) led 1-0 after 20 minutes for the second straight night on a goal by Matt Basgall, and the second period saw the two teams trade goals – three for the Gophers, two for MSU from Joey Larson and Tanner Kelly – to leave the ice in a 3-3 deadlock for the second intermission.

What a statement win by No. 2 Michigan State hockey on Friday against against No. 4 Minnesota. The Spartans took down the Golden Gophers 9 to 3 in an absolute blowout in Munn Arena. This was a massive win by the Spartans who were just one point ahead of Minnesota in the conference standings heading into this game.
The Spartans used four third-period goals to top the Gophers 9-3 in the series opener of the top two teams in the Big Ten.
But the Gophers (17-3 overall, 5-3 Big Ten) struggled to finish against Michigan’s physical defense, making only nine of 33 second-half shots and just four of 15 in the fourth q
With each passing game, Michigan’s freshmen look less and less like rookies. On Thursday night in Minneapolis, they carried the Wolverines to their first top-25 win of the season. Michigan beat No. 23 Minnesota 70-65, handing the Golden Gophers their first loss at Williams Arena this season in 12 tries.
