Spain’s King Felipe and Queen Letizia were berated by angry residents in a visit on Sunday to the hard hit area of Paiporta. Letizia, in particular, seemed shaken by the shouts of “murderers” as mud was flung at the royal couple. Prime Minister Sanchez was also there but was quickly whisked away by security.

In the blink of an eye, the muddy water covered roads and railways and entered houses and businesses in villages on the southern outskirts of Valencia city. Drivers scrambled onto car roofs while residents sought refuge on higher ground.

Spain is reeling from its worst flooding in decades, after a year’s worth of rain fell in just hours this week in the country’s southern and eastern regions.
