The group’s announcement came hours after President Felix Tshisekedi called for a massive military mobilisation to resist the rebellion.

Rwanda-backed rebels who have captured eastern Congo’s largest city say they plan to take their rebellion to the capital and seek to gain political power.

The rebels, which Rwanda denies supporting, have long been funded at least in part by the illicit mineral trade.
