The Texas House has given final approval to the new congressional voting maps, and Republicans used their majority to push it through. Within seconds, House Speaker Dustin Burrows removed the “call of the House.” The chamber doors were unlocked and House members are now allowed to leave.
The state House has reconvened on Wednesday as GOP lawmakers in the Lone Star State look to push ahead with a newly redrawn congressional map designed for Republicans to pick up five U.S. House seats ahead of the 2026 midterms. The plan, known as House Bill 4, could come to a vote on Wednesday in the House and as early as Thursday in the Senate.
"Trump is trying to steal the 2026 election by rigging the system and changing electoral maps," the event's website states. "We are fighting back."
Trump's push for states to redraw political maps and create more GOP-friendly House seats in time for the 2026 election has raised the stakes.
Several Dallas and Fort Worth-area Black advocacy groups gathered Saturday morning at Friendship West Baptist Church to speak against a Republican-led effort to redraw the U.S. Congressional districts in Texas.
The event was part of a national day of action, "Fight the Trump Takover," in protest of the redrawing of congressional maps in Texas. Protestors gathered on the Union and Eastmoreland overpasses and held signs and banners with statements such as "Resist" and "Stop Trump Save Democracy."

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott on Friday called a second special session to push through a redrawing of congressional maps to secure up to five more Republican seats in the US House.
