A kidney stone is a hard object, which can be as small as a grain of salt or as big as a golf ball, made from chemicals—calcium oxalate, uric acid, struvite, and cystine—found in our urine.
The size of kidney stones is varied, ranging from grain-like, to a golf ball! While in some cases, kidney stones can cause pain, in most cases, it can remain asymptomatic, sometimes over years.
Sometimes, the stones are due to who you're related to. "We do see it often times it can run in families, so there's a genetic propensity for forming these stones," said Dr. Liu.
But, like kidney stones, if gallstones work their way into a narrower space (like the common bile duct), they too can cause problems such as abdominal pain, infections and jaundice.
