In 1948, John Hopkins, chief designer of camouflage at ERDL, Fort Belvoir, Virginia, USA, designed a camouflage that became known as the ‘ERDL’ or ‘leaf’ pattern.

The transition period for the pattern will extend from July 1, 2015 to Sept. 30, 2019. The entire Army will be in the Operational Camouflage Pattern by Oct. 1, 2019.

The roll out will consist of three phases, Mortlock said. Some bases will see the operational camouflage pattern uniforms July 1 while others will receive their first merchandise Sept. 1 or Nov. 1.
