In 1999, Suzuki debuted the Sidekick 4x4, a marginally larger variant of the Samurai. Moreover, General Motors sold its version of the Sidekick as the Geo Tracker that same year.

With it came an advertising push with TV spots depicting the Samurai as a fun little unassuming car that was cute and approachable. Suzuki's plans were for the sales of 1,200 units per month.
