Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi took holy dips in sacred river waters in the northern city of Prayagraj on Wednesday as he joined millions of people at the Maha Kumbh Mela, a week after dozens died in a stampede at the event.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Prayagraj for the Maha Kumbh Mela, taking a sacred dip at the Sangam and inaugurating infrastructure projects worth INR 5,500 crore. The event saw participation from international leaders and celebrities and had a massive turnout of over 12.

India's Hindu nationalist Prime Minister Narendra Modi made a ritual river dip on Wednesday at the world's largest religious festival, a week after a stampede killed at least 30 pilgrims.

After his ritual bath, Modi expressed his gratitude, saying, "The 'snan', or the 'holy dip', at the 'sangam' is a moment of divine connection. May Maa Ganga bless all with peace, wisdom, good health, and harmony."

The Triveni Sangam is the confluence of Ganga and Yamuna and is the site of Maka Kumbh where nearly 30 crore people have taken the dip so far. Hindu religious belief says that mythical river Saraswati also joins Ganga and Yamuna at Sangam.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to visit the Maha Kumbh Mela in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh on Wednesday, a statement issued by the Prime Minister's Office said. During his visit, he will take a holy dip and offer prayers to Maa Ganga at the Sangam at around 11 am.

Holding 'rudraksha' beads and chanting mantras, the Prime Minister offered prayers while standing in the river.
