State Rep. Phil Skaggs, D-East Grand Rapids, introduced a bill that would set up a 17-member flag commission to officiate a public design contest to change the current state flag.

People often don’t feel a sense of connection to the Michigan flag or view it as something they identify with, as evidenced by the lack of residents embracing the current design, Skaggs said.
