Artist Paul Stankard is among contemporary glass-makers represented in the collection. Paperweights first appeared in Europe in the mid-1840s, according to the Corning Museum of Glass.
In the late 1970s, with her small collection started, Hoover learned of Lawrence Selman, a well-known paperweight specialist. She and her husband met Selman in his small office in Santa Cruz.
Her collection also is split among her three homes, with about 350 paperweights in Texas, 80 in Colorado and 50 in her Kahuku home. The most expensive cost $15,000.
The collection was donated by Gladys and Byron Paddock of Bloomington. The paperweights date from the mid-1970s through latter part of the '90s. More than 500 paperweights are in the collection.
