all 2 channel optical is the same, toslink, s/pdif...the only other common-ish optical format would be ADAT (uses same kind of optical cable as toslink spdif, just has 8 channels of audio in and out).

The Ser2 was hooked via S-video and L/R audio to one of the Video inputs of the Sony TV, and the TV's Optical Audio Out was hooked to the Sony Receiver. This had worked fine for several years.
