Of these, 26 villages are from Radhanagari taluka of Kolhapur district and 15 are from Sindhudurg district. The villages in Sindhudurg district are in Kudal and Kankavli talukas.
There are roughly 10 to 12 elephants in these southern forests spread in Kolhapur and Sindhudurg. The area is near the Karnataka borders, from where wild elephants entered Maharashtra in 2002-03.
