Flower beds were showing iris, many varieties of iris. This plant family ranges from A to Z, from African to Zebra varieties. All three gardens had bearded irises and Siberian varieties.

The flower’s been called iris since medieval times because it comes in a rainbow variety of colors. “Iris” has also been the colored part of the eye since the early 15th century.

Submitted photo AUBURN — The Maine Iris Society plans to host its 42nd annual Median Iris & Spring Flower Show from 1:30 to 4 p.m. Saturday, June 4, at the Auburn Middle School at 38 Falcon Drive.

Bearded irises are a primary and much-loved crop on the farm, with nearly 200 varieties rowed out in their field. Estrada thinks bearded iris are underrated, both in the garden and as a cut flower.

The first iris flower at the garden blossomed on May 8 this season, about 10 days earlier than a typical year. The flowers are most spectacular until around June 20. Admission to the garden is free.
