The 98th America's Thanksgiving Parade in Detroit delivered on its theme of “Miles of Smiles!" this year — attracting spectators from all over.

The parade featured the traditional balloons and floats, and Santa Claus on a Christmas-themed float brought up the rear.

Thursday's events start at 7:30 a.m. with the Turkey Trot, before the 5K Stuffing Strut starts at 8:30 a.m. The parade starts on Woodward Avenue at Kirby in Midtown Detroit at 8:45 a.m. The parade is roughly an hour and a half march south down Woodward and it ends at Congress and Woodward.

The Detroit parade is the second largest behind the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York in terms of its viewership and the number of people going to see it in person — an estimated 1 million in Detroit last year, Michaels said. “We want to get Detroit on this big national map, and we’ve worked very hard to do that," he said.

On Nov. 25, 1920, the Gimbel Brothers hosted the first Thanksgiving Day parade in Philadelphia. The annual Thanksgiving Day parade celebrated its 105th edition Thursday, proudly counted in local advertisements as the oldest such event in American history.
