For example, an application cover letter might include a phrase like “thank you for your consideration,” while a speaking invitation might include a deadline to accept and who to contact.

The memo describes the action the company will take. For example, expanding distribution channels to include markets outside the United States might be an appropriate strategic action.

Another aspect to consider is the difference between a cover letter and a thank-you note. The latter is more often sent to casting directors—it’s less an intro than a way to affirm your interest.
