The term was coined by the tobacco company, they say, to describe the cellulose acetate fibers that are part of all cigarette filters and the carbon granules found specifically in charcoal filters.
Currently, cigarette filters are made from cellulose acetate and although technically they are biodegradable, this can take as along as 10-15 years in certain environmental conditions.
“Ninety seven percent of cigarette filters are made from cellulose acetate, a material that’s used widely,” said Ernie Simpson, TerraCycle’s vice president for research and development.
