A handful of Texas House Democrats were locked in the state Capitol overnight as a protest against a House rule that required members who fled the state earlier this month to be followed by a police chaperone.

Texas Republicans forced Democrats to sign a slip authorizing a police officer to surveil them until Wednesday, when the House is scheduled to reconvene.

A state lawmaker has refused to leave the Texas Capitol as Republicans use police to prevent Democrats from fleeing the state over a redistricting vote.
