A Grand Rapids mother has pleaded not guilty to setting her house on fire, but admitted she intended to die with her daughters "so they could be free."

The mother told Grand Rapids officials she removed all the smoke alarms before setting the house on fire while her three daughters were asleep.

Singleton allegedly removed seven fire alarms from the home before setting it on fire on Saturday morning, the AP, FOX 17 and WOOD TV reported, citing Grand Rapids Police Chief Eric Winstrom and unspecified court documents, respectively. The fire alarms were found ringing inside a pillowcase in the backyard, per authorities, FOX 17 reported.

The mom is accused of timing the blaze for when her three daughters — ages 7, 10 and 12 — would all be asleep, removing the fire alarms, which were later found stuffed in a pillowcase in the backyard, officials told the outlet.

Shamiya Stewart died Monday night, two days after the fire in Grand Rapids. Two other children, ages 7 and 10, survived. Winstrom said the 46-year-old mother removed seven smoke detectors from the house and poured lighter fluid before setting the fire. She was outside when police arrived.
