Two Tyson Foods plants in North Philadelphia that produce cheesesteak meat will close in the next two months, prompting layoffs for more than 200 workers.

Arkansas-based Tyson Foods acquired Original Philly Holdings Inc., the parent company of Original Philly Cheesesteak Co. and Philadelphia Pre-Cooked Steak Co., in November 2017 for an undisclosed amount. The company, part of Tyson's prepared foods division, sells its cheesesteak meat products to foodservice, retail and convenience store providers.

The two North Philly factories are associated with Original Philly Holdings, which makes meat for cheesesteaks.

Tyson Foods is expected to close two North Philadelphia-based plants and layoff 229 workers by the end of January, next year. The plants produced products for the Original Philly produce line.

Tyson Foods said its ground beef and value-added marinated protein plant would be shuttered in February 2025 to help the company operate more efficiently.
