The first area has been under the eyes of the National Hurricane Center for a few days as it emerged off Africa’s west coast.

Hurricane Erin is tracking just off the U.S. East Coast and is expected to bring dangerous storm surge, coastal flooding and powerful waves to North Carolina’s Outer Banks and parts of the mid-Atlantic.

Hurricane Erin remains a Category 4 as life-threatening surf and rip currents are likely across the U.S. eastern seaboard this week, the National Hurricane Center announced.

Hurricane Erin, the first Atlantic hurricane of 2025, has weakened to a Category 3 but remains a major threat. Tropical storm warnings are in effect for the Turks and Caicos Islands, while the Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico are experiencing heavy rains and gusty winds.

The National Hurricane Center is monitoring three different disturbances in the Atlantic region. On Monday, Invest 97-L was upgraded into Tropical Storm Erin. A few hours later, an area in the Gulf was also tagged.

Hurricane Erin became the first hurricane of the season Friday morning, and is expected to develop into a major Category 3 storm this weekend then intensify further as it passes to the north of Puerto Rico in the Atlantic,
