A strike by farmers over the Government’s tractor tax would have the support of more than half of the British public, polling has found. Striking farmers would be backed by 55 per cent of the public – higher than support for action by junior doctors or teachers,

Dozens of farmers have staged a go-slow tractor protest on the roads of Dover over changes to inheritance tax. The protestors called on the government to “stop betraying” British farming and rural communities.

Farms worth more than about $1.3 million will face an estate tax from 2026, ending a previous exemption and prompting anger in some rural communities.

The number of farms that could be affected by the inheritance tax change is also disputed. The government says it will only affect the wealthiest 500 estates each year but the NFU and the Country Land and Business Association (CLA) have estimated up to 70,000 farms could be affected.
