(WBNG) -- The night before Thanksgiving is often referred to as, “Blackout Wednesday.” It’s widely known for being one of the biggest drinking days in the United States. With so many people drinking, whether it’s at a bar or home with friends, there is an increased risk of people getting behind the wheel under the influence.

Many prepare for Thanksgiving by celebrating with friends the night before. But police warn you need to do it safely.

PennDOT is urging drivers to be safe on “Blackout Wednesday.” It is a nickname for one of the largest drinking days of the year, the Wednesday before Thanksgiving. The agency wants people to have a designated driver if they participate.
