There is a shuttle bus from Istanbul Airport to Sultanahmet. From the arrivals hall, go down to level -2 and the new Havaist buses will be outside. Buses from Istanbul Airport to Sultanahmet depart from bay 16 and stop at Sultanahmet Square, near Aghia Sophia. The fare is 18 TL; you can pay directly to the driver (he will come to your seat before departure), or use a Istanbulkarte (you can purchase one at the airport and load it with fares, good for buses, trams, metro and ferries). Most museums/sights near Sultanahmet open at 9am, but lines can be long, so arriving before opening hours can improve your line position.

Also, if you follow the rail system tracks, that are directly in front of the Cistern, (you MUST visit this, as well!) head toward the water, following next to the tracks, and you will come to a pier. The BEST spice market in the world, has it's entrance right there! Go inside, and look for GODZE, they have the best teas, Turkish Delight, dried fruits, spices and so much more! I definitely suggest walking, most of your trip. There is so much to see and experience!
